Compare Intel's® Turbo Boost Technology

Next-generation Intel® Core™ microarchitecture (codenamed Nehalem)What is Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and how does it work?
Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is a way to automatically run the processor core faster than the marked frequency if the part is operating under power, temperature, and current specifications limits of the Thermal Design Power (TDP). This results in increased performance of both single and multi-threaded applications.

How is Turbo Boost different from overclocking a processor?
It is very different than overclocking. Turbo Boost technology keeps the processor within Intel's recommended operating specifications at all times, overclocking does not. Turbo boost automatically provides the 'turbo boost' when your computer needs it, turns it off when you don't.

"Overclocking" a processor keeps it running beyond intel's specs at all times thus voiding the Intel warranty and reducing the lifespan of your processor and motherboard! Also see our article called "Do Not Overclock" it explains in great detail. At NTI we never overclock any processor in our systems.

Which processor families support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology?

  • Intel® Core™ i7 mobile and desktop processors
  • Intel® Core™ i7 processor extreme edition
  • Intel® Core™ i7 mobile processor extreme edition
  • Intel® Core™ i5 mobile and desktop processors

What factors influence Intel® Turbo Boost Technology operation?
While Intel® Turbo Boost Technology availability is independent of the number of active cores, the operation is dependent on having headroom (cores operating under TDP) available in one or more cores. The amount of time the system spends in turbo boost will ultimately depend on workload, operating environment, and platform design.

Also see this video from Toms Hardware

It explains the benefits of Turbo Boost smart technology vs the risks of overclocking. Bottom line if you are not a gamer, Turbo Boost technology is made for you and there is no need to overclock. if you are a gamer and have accepted the risks of reduced lifespan of the processor, proceed at your own risk. NTI never overclocks our processors.
